Prepare for loud noise/emergency vehicles/helicopters Friday evening over Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ---The 9th Annual Be Ready Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville will conclude with a MOCK DISASTER, March 27, at 6:00 PM.  Please help us get out the word by notifying the GENERAL PUBLIC regarding this Mock Disaster.   The event will involve what sounds like an explosion, followed by the flying of at least one helicopter and then multiple emergency vehicles.

The emergency vehicles will make their way to Aviation Challenge, which is on the campus of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Dozens of adults and students will volunteer for the mock disaster by playing the role of injured victims.  The purpose of this MAJOR EVENT is to train young people how to prepare for and respond to a disaster.

Be Ready Camp utilizes a modified Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training as a foundation and broadened to include emergency preparedness, introduction to survival and first aid, developing an emergency kit, creating a family disaster plan, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, triage, career exploration and terrorism awareness. Throughout each lesson, students have the ability to show their knowledge with hands–on demonstrations.

Camp will conclude with a mock disaster, where the students perform victim search and rescue alongside professional responders in a realistic setting. The students are tasked with bringing the message of preparedness to their families and communities.

The best opportunity for video and live shots will be Friday night at 6:00. Students will begin to put on gear for the mock disaster as well as get final instructions. The mock disaster will begin at 6:00pm and end around 8:30pm. The media is such an important part of a real disaster and we would love for the students to also learn how to talk to the media about what they are doing and learning.

Saturday March 28, 2015 is graduation and a final opportunity for video. Graduation will begin at 10:00am.

If you would like to make this into a longer format piece or a TSR/Sweeps piece please contact Ashley Whittle Tiedt at ashley.tiedt@servealabama.gov or 334-328-5971 to arrange times to observe class room activities.
