Huntsville, Ala. — The U.S. Space & Rocket Center will hold a news conference to announce the beginning of the Saturn V replica restoration project Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. The Rocket Center has contracted with Birmingham Steel Erectors (BSE) to paint the Saturn V outside the Davidson Center for Exploration. PPG, a leading global coatings company, is providing the specialized paint for the project through its COLORFUL COMMUNITIES™ program.
The Colorful Communities program provides PPG volunteers and products along with financial contributions to bring color and vitality to communities where the company operates around the world, such as in Huntsville, where PPG operates an aerospace transparencies manufacturing facility. In March of 2019, PPG employee volunteers will participate in a Colorful Communities event at the USSRC to help revitalize the Saturn V replica.
The 300-ton crane arrives Wednesday morning on several flat-bed trucks to begin the four-month restoration project that will involve lifting a crew the height of the 363-foot-tall Saturn V to power wash, seal and paint it.
Media should arrive at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration by 10:45 a.m.
