It can be daunting to raise the funds needed for a group trip, but thousands of groups have done it successfully and we’re here to share some of the best tips and ideas! 1. Ask a company to sponsor your group to attend. Large or small, every business is looking for their future workforce. Companies like to invest in events that pay back in educated employees. 2. Create a fundraising website. The website, donorschoose.org, allows public school teachers to submit their project ideas. Anyone can go online and donate money toward your project. For example, one teacher recently used the site to raise money for students to attend Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students (SCIVIS). 3. Partner on a pre-existing fundraising opportunity through businesses. Many businesses already offer fundraising ideas for your school. For example, some doughnut shops offer parents and students an opportunity to sell boxes at a reduced price. Other businesses will donate a portion of their own sales for some period of time for a special event. 4. Collect food labels to raise money. Most educators have heard of General Mills Box Tops for Education – a program that donates money for every to collected. In addition to General Mills, other companies offer ways to raise cash for your school: Campbell's Labels for Education and Tyson Project A+. 5. Contact your local legislative delegates for help. Your local State Senators and Members of the House of Representatives have discretionary funds and often support school programs. Contact them with a proposal explaining your goals and ask for financial assistance. 6. Search for grant opportunities. Teachers often write grants to receive money for their classroom or school, but grants are also available for field trips. Target is just one of the large companies that awards grants specifically for field trips. 7. Ask local civic clubs or other organizations for assistance. Local civic clubs often sponsor school activities. These include Kiwanis, Rotary Club, Civitan, social, charitable or veterans' organizations. Contact a local member, or visit their websites, and see if they would be willing to help. 8. Ask local businesses for sponsorship. Local businesses are just as likely to donate as chain stores and big box retailers. Don't limit yourself to retail stores but also try restaurants and non-traditional businesses as well. Locally owned agencies, including real-estate and insurance agents are also options. Groups often use funds to purchase additional items such as t-shirts with the name of the businesses showcased. Be sure to hold a press conference at their business to highlight their support and civic leadership. 9. Traditional school fundraisers like auctions, raffles and sweepstakes can raise big sums. Car washes, bake sales and magazine sales are also still popular. 10. Collect donations for silent auctions or raffles. Solicit raffle or auction items from local businesses – the bigger the prize, the better! Even services or special events like a catered meal or moonlight ride have appeal. Host a silent auction or sell tickets for a raffle to benefit your school. Get someone to donate a large prize or trip to raise major money. 11. Host a giant yard sale. Collect donations and have parents volunteer to assist in a community-wide yard sale with profits benefitting your trip. 12. Collaborate with other schools. Many schools bring whole grades or several classes together. It is particularly helpful for small or rural schools to work together to bring students. If traveling by bus, sometimes the transportation cost per student is lowered, depending on the number of people. For any fundraising effort, let people know! Pass the word around about your trip to your school, teachers, families (including extended family), Chambers of Commerce, churches, clubs and businesses that you and your students support.
